As full-time RV travelers, we often plan for the sunshine and warm weather Florida and the southern states are famous for. However, Mother Nature has her surprises, and we recently experienced an unexpected cold wave that taught us a lot about packing for a variety of climates. Some areas of the Florida panhandle experienced up to 10 inches of snow! Here are our top tips to stay prepared for unpredictable weather on the road.
1. Layers Are Your Best Friend
Packing a variety of lightweight, easily layerable clothing is key for handling temperature swings. Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulating mid-layers like fleece or wool, and finish with a weatherproof outer layer.
Essentials:
- Thermal tops and leggings
- Hoodies or sweatshirts
- Waterproof jacket
2. Don’t Forget the Cold-Weather Extras
During the cold wave, items we typically overlook became lifesavers. These extras are small but make a big difference in comfort.
Must-Haves:
- Warm socks (wool or thermal)
- Gloves and beanies
- A travel blanket or sleeping bag rated for low temperatures
3. Versatile Footwear Is Key
We learned the hard way that flip-flops and lightweight sneakers won’t cut it when temperatures plummet. A sturdy pair of insulated boots will keep your feet warm and dry, whether you’re walking through frost or unexpected snow.
4. Pack for Warm Weather Too
Even during a cold snap, Florida’s daytime temperatures can quickly rebound. Lightweight, breathable clothing is just as important for warmer afternoons.
Include:
- T-shirts
- Convertible pants (zip-off style)
- A wide-brimmed hat for sun protection
5. Stay Weather-Ready in Your RV
While packing for yourself is essential, prepping your RV for unexpected weather is equally critical. Insulating your windows, carrying space heaters, and ensuring your propane supply is topped up can make a big difference.
6. Keep an Eye on the Forecast
Weather can change quickly, especially in regions like Florida. Apps like AccuWeather or NOAA can help you stay ahead of sudden temperature drops or storms, giving you time to adjust your plans.
The Takeaway
This cold wave in Florida reminded us of the unpredictability of travel. Whether you’re headed to sunny beaches or snowy mountains, being prepared for all climates ensures comfort and enjoyment on the road. Remember, it’s better to overpack than to find yourself unprepared—especially when temperatures take an unexpected dip! We were lucky that this year we kept some layers from working the sugar beet harvest in North Dakota and Minnesota.
